Information about Los Angeles Valley College mining techniques, registering in a technical degree program, and taking practice exams for free online. Qualifications for engineering programs may vary widely. Learn about the various specialization options available to you within this expanding technical field. If you complete the mining engineering program, for example, there are a variety of concentrations that may appeal to you such as petroleum engineering, mineral exploration, or alternative energy. Further, due to advances in mining techniques, there is a growing shortage of mining engineering graduates, and of skilled mineral engineers in general. Please use the form above to request admissions info for Los Angeles Valley College.

Mining techniques have dramatically transformed over many years, with technological advances improving efficiency and safety. In the discovery stage of mineral exploration, mining engineers work closely with geologists to identify minerals and assess reserve quantities. Mineral engineers may then drill core samples and conduct surface surveys, searching for specific compounds and ores. Unless mineral engineering is done on public lands, the property owners may play a significant role in mining exploration.

Generally, mining is either done from the surface or underground. Surface mining requires the stripping of surface vegetation, dirt, and if necessary, layers of bedrock in order to reach buried ore deposits. Additionally, explosives may be called for in order to facilitate breakage. Hard minerals such as limestone, sand, gravel, and slate are generally quarried into a series of benches. Strip mining, on the other hand, is more appropriate for softer minerals such as clays and phosphate. In-situ mining can be done from the surface using dissolving agents, retrieving the ore via pumps. Finally, hydraulic jets may be utilized to wash away the overburden or to clear out the ore itself.

Automotive Engineering

Here are some basic tips from a diesel mechanic on how to check the condition of an automobile. Does the car start right up when you turn the ignition key? If not, the electrolyte solution in the battery acid may be low, or there may be an electrical short in the charging system. To test brake systems, just tap the brakes at high speed, and see if there's any noise or a spongy feel to the brake pedal, which indicates either air in the brake lines, or decomposition in brake fluid viscosity.

Testing the cylinder compression of either the diesel or gasoline engine is simple as well. Just find a hill, and try to accelerate up it from a standing start, noting any black smoke or backfire noise that results from incorrect ignition timing, valve wear, or pinston ring problems within the engine itself. How does the car shift through the gears? Is it smooth, or do you feel a clunk as it shifts, which may signal transmission repair is not too far removed.

Engineering Job Listings

The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Wages vary by employer and location. Aside from salary, most engineering jobs include excellent benefits, as well as retirement plans.
