Mining techniques have dramatically transformed over many years, with technological advances improving efficiency and safety. In the discovery stage of mineral exploration, mining engineers work closely with geologists to identify minerals and assess reserve quantities. Mineral engineers may then drill core samples and conduct surface surveys, searching for specific compounds and ores. Unless mineral engineering is done on public lands, the property owners may play a significant role in mining exploration.
Generally, mining is either done from the surface or underground. Surface mining requires the stripping of surface vegetation, dirt, and if necessary, layers of bedrock in order to reach buried ore deposits. Additionally, explosives may be called for in order to facilitate breakage. Hard minerals such as limestone, sand, gravel, and slate are generally quarried into a series of benches. Strip mining, on the other hand, is more appropriate for softer minerals such as clays and phosphate. In-situ mining can be done from the surface using dissolving agents, retrieving the ore via pumps. Finally, hydraulic jets may be utilized to wash away the overburden or to clear out the ore itself.

Urban Planning Programs
Urban planning covers everything from ensuring water-supply networks, to designing municipal solid-waste management and disposal. In the case of underground utility networks, it also includes maintaining conduits and access of electrical and telecommunications cables. Municipal engineers may also design civil projects including large buildings, industrial plants, or treatment facilities. Transportation engineering focuses on the construction and maintainence of streets, highways, and mass transit systems. Urban planners averaged $80,500 annually in 2015, much higher than in many other occupations.Surveyors may be called in to lay out the routes of railways, roads, and canals before construction begins. New advances in Global Positioning Systems (GPS) allow high-precision surveys down to the square foot, a greater resolution than was previously available. Although surveying is a distinct profession with separate qualifications and licensing arrangements, civil engineers must be trained in the basics of mapping, as well as geographic information system (GIS).

Engineering Job Listings
The Fundamentals of Engineering exam should be taken immediately after earning a bachelors degree from an ABET-accredited program. Engineers who pass this exam are called engineers in training (EIT), or engineer interns. After meeting work experience requirements, engineer interns can attempt a second certifying exam, called the Principles and Practice of Engineering Exam. Thereafter, acquisition of a professional engineering license enables management of junior engineers, the ability to sign off on engineering projects, and provide services directly to the public. Wages vary by employer and location. Aside from salary, most engineering jobs include excellent benefits, as well as retirement plans.Job listings below are updated hourly: | Starting Salary (up to) | 10 Year Salary (up to) |
